Roland C. Clement

Mr. Clement is a staff biologist at the National Audubon Society, and has recently written two editorials in Audubon magazine. He reflects a wide range of bird enthusiasts and persons concerned with human relationship with nature. In 1959, the Audubon Society joined other conservation organizations in opposing a program to eradicate fire ants (discussed by Carson). [Perhaps also investigate the case of ornithologist Robert Cushman Murphy and his 1957 suit against the USDA.]

Be sure to review Chaps. 1-2,5,7,8,10,15 of Silent Spring. You should be able to comment on harm to non-target species and the balance and control of nature. Be familiar with the case of the fire ants, discussed by Carson in Chap. 10.
