Science Teachers Workshop for
Sociology, History and Philosophy of Science

Minneapolis, MN
JUNE 15-24, 2009

This workshop will bring together science teachers and historians, philosophers and sociologists of science. We will share experience using HPSS in science education, discuss foundational issues for more effective practice, and -- most importantly -- work in small teams to assemble practical case studies for classroom use.

Themes will include:

  • experience of historians co-writing science textbooks
  • using case studies and simulations in science
  • evaluating HPSS knowledge in context (not through nature-of-science surveys)
  • the status of the learning-recapitulates-history analogy
  • implications of feminist and social epistemology for the science classroom
  • guiding classrooms as investigative communities
  • how to frame state or national curriculum standards to foster fruitful classroom practice

We hope the event will be enriched by being held alongside a meeting of the Society for the Philosophy of Science in Practice (SPSP).
