Configure SSL in Outlook Express 6.x
Prior to configuring SSL setting in Outlook
Express do the following:
If you are using Windows XP, verify that you have Windows SP2 installed
If you already have SP2 installed you may go immediately to the
Configure SSL in Outlook Express. Do the following to check if you already have SP2:
- click start then click run.
In the run box, type winver and click OK.

- An About Windows box will popup. If you see Service Pack 2 in the Version description, you can proceed to Configure SSL in Outlook Express.

Install SP2 From a CD
- OIT now offers free SP2 CDs to UM students, staff, and faculty – available at 1-HELP 152 ShepLabs, 93 Blegen, 50 Coffey, as well as UCS and Residence Halls. If you are connecting to the internet through a dialup connection, downloading SP2 will take up a very long time. Therefore, installing SP2 from a CD will be more convenient than installing it from the Internet.
- Insert the CD into your computer.
- The setup program will launch automatically.
- At the Window XP Service Pack 2 Setup Wizard, accept all of the recommended options, and click I Agree at the License Agreement prompt.
- After installation is complete, click Finish and allow your system to restart.
Install SP2 From the Internet
- SP2 and other Windows critical updates are available from the Windows Update site. It is accessible from the start menu or from within the Internet Explorer web browser.
- You need to have a connection to the internet to perform this method of installation.
- Open Internet Explorer. From the menu bar, click Tools and click Windows Update.
- Click the following link: Express Install (Recommended): High Priority Updates for Your Computer. Windows will look for available updates.
- Windows Update scans your computer and lists updates you need. Select Service Pack 2 in the list and then click Go to install updates.
- On the Install Updates page, click Install.
- After the Install has completed, your system will restart.
Configure SSL in Outlook Express
- Launch Outlook Express 6.x.
- Click on Tools and select Accounts.

- Click on the e-mail account you wish to alter, and then click the
Properties button.

- Click on the Servers tab and verify the following entries:
- Incoming mail: your_internet_id.email.umn.edu
- Outgoing mail: smtp.umn.edu
- Account name: your_internet_id
- Log on using Secure Password Authentication: box is unchecked
- My server requires authentication: box is checked

- Click the Settings button.
- Select Use same settings as my incoming mail server" and click
OK.

- Under Server Information you will see one of the following. Please
select the one which matches your setting:

My incoming mail
server is a IMAP server. My incoming mail
server is a POP3 server.
