Netscape Communicator 4.5-4.8 for Mac OS 9 (note: Netscape 4 does not run natively in Mac OS X, but will run in emulation under "Classic" mode. Netscape Communicator 4.0 does not support authenticated IMAP, POP or SMTP; please use Netscape Communicator 4.5 or up.)

• Open Netscape Communicator 4.
• If you are setting up Netscape to access e-mail for the first time, Netscape 4 will open the New Profile Setup; if your U of MN e-mail account has previously been configured, New Profile Setup will not appear and you can skip to IMAP (Netscape 4.5-4.8 does not support authenticated POP) instructions here. Otherwise, click Next and follow the steps of the New Profile Setup utility.
  

• (Window 2 of 10): Using your name and U of MN e-mail address, set your e-mail account identity and click Next.

• (Window 3 of 10): In this window, set your Profile Name. This can generally be your full name.

• (Window 4 of 10): in this window, unless you want to change the folder where your profile will be stored, click Next.
  

• (Window 5 of 10): In the Outgoing mail (SMTP) server field of this window, input smtp.umn.edu and click Next.
  

• (Window 6 of 10): In the Mail server user name field of this window, enter your U of MN Internet ID. Incoming mail server should read <your U of MN Internet ID>.email.umn.edu. Choose your Mail server type from either the IMAP (preferred at the U of MN) or POP protocols. Click Next.
  

• (Window 7 of 10): In the News (NNTP) server field of this window, input news.tc.umn.edu if you will be connecting via the U of MN network (modem dialup, wireless or ethernet). If you have a non-U of MN connection (dialup through another Internet Service Provider, or Cable or DSL internet), you will need to input the server used by that provider; contact their technical support for this information. The checkbox labeled Secure should be checked, and the Port number should automatically adjust itself to 563.
  
  
  

• (Window 8 of 10): In this window, choose the shortcuts Netscape Communicator 4.x should create on your desktop by checking or unchecking the items you would like. Click Next.
  

• (Window 9 of 10): In this window, choose whether or not you would like Netscape Communicator 4 to Import information from other programs by checking the checkbox or leaving it unchecked. Click Next.
  

• (Window 10 of 10): In this window, click Done to save your profile and start Netscape Communicator 4.x.
