| In the late 19th and early 20th centuries a small group of inventors, engineers, and visionaries started to design and in some cases build experimental rockets. These tentative experiments demonstrated the feasibility of rocket powered flight, but the construction of a space vehicle required the skill and expertise of well organized engineering teams.
