Students in the University of Minnesota chapter of Engineers Without Borders are turning Haiti's massive garbage problem into a solution. A portable solar cooker can melt plastic waste into a liquid that can be molded into such items such as footwear, utensils, and sports equipment.
Through GoNorth!, University of Minnesota professor Aaron Doering and his colleagues travel the Arctic Circle to study climate change and K-12 students learn alongside them on the Web. Doering hopes this form of adventure learning will continue to take place in other parts the world.
