Traffic Management

Parking and Transportation Services (PTS) and other University departments have joined with local and state transportation officials to create a comprehensive parking and traffic plan for Gopher football fans to give you the best campus travel experience possible.

PTS has developed a traffic management plan designed to ease congestion and ensure safe, efficient movement through campus on game-days.

  • Officers will be at key intersections, parking access points and pedestrian crossings
  • Special event signal timing will be implemented
    • Pre-game –favors inbound traffic
    • Post-game –favors outbound traffic
  • Portable changeable message signs will alert drivers of event-related road traffic changes
  • An on-campus traffic management center will monitor Minnesota Department of Transportation (Mn/DOT) video feeds
    • Watch for back-ups/incidents
    • Communicate messages to the public via freeway changeable signs and University websites
  • On-street parking will be temporarily restricted at select locations to promote efficient traffic flow
  • Some streets immediately adjacent to TCF Bank Stadium will be partially or fully closed to accommodate large pedestrian volumes before and after events
  • For parking facilities north of University Avenue, season ticket holders were encouraged to use University Avenue via I-35W or Highway 280
  • For facilities south of University Avenue, season ticket holders were encouraged to use Huron Avenue and Washington Avenue

Taxis

Taxi Pick-up and Drop-off
All taxi services are required to use our designated taxi location on football gamedays. The official location for pick up and drop off will be along the curbs on Beacon Street between Oak Street and Ontario Street. This street is one-way westbound, so cabs should enter Beacon Street from Ontario Street.

Traffic Plan FYI for Taxi Drivers
Single game football parking (public parking in any attended facility) will only be available on West Bank and in St. Paul. We are encouraging everyone who has not pre-purchased season parking passes to avoid driving to East Bank. We are promoting transit as an alternate choice as well as offering a Gopher football shuttle to provide a way to get from the West Bank and St. Paul over to the stadium.

If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact Ben Schnabel, Assistant Director of Public Parking and Events. He can be reached by e-mail at schna015@umn.edu or by phone at 612-624-5001.

We hope that you find this information helpful and encourage you to share this information with all of your employees who need to know these details.
