The East Gateway District is quickly taking shape. The advent of the TCF Stadium and new research buildings will soon create a bustling, exhilarating destination on campus.

Parking choices and traffic patterns in the area have been impacted and PTS has worked diligently to develop solutions that will lessen the impact upon our customers. Thank you for your patience and understanding.

Please note that - as with all major construction projects - dates and details may change. Periodic updates will be made to this page.

Building Construction Projects

A. TCF Stadium - full scale construction began July 2007.

B. Medical Biosciences Building (MBB) - construction began November 2007.

Public Parking Options

Public parking in the East Gateway District may be tight. Try these suggestions:

  • Park on the St. Paul campus and ride the campus shuttle to East and West Bank.

  • Purchase an unlimited ride U-Pass or Metropass and take the bus or light rail to campus.

  • Form or join a carpool.

  • Bike or walk if you can.

Public parking in the East Gateway District:

1. Lot 37 - The daily rate lot was expanded to 651 spaces in July 2007.

2. Lot 33 - Opened as a carpool lot in July 2007.

3. New Maroon Lot (formerly Hawkeye) - Reopened as a daily rate location in August 2007.

4. Additional options may become available in 2008.

Biking

Although the Transitway will end at 23rd Avenue starting June 4, 2007, a bike lane will be created to follow the new Campus Connector route. It will skirt the stadium site on the north side, ending at Oak Street, so bike riders can easily connect between campuses and beyond.

SUBJECT: Medical Biosciences Building and East Gateway District Construction

We realize that it is never easy to live through construction, and we appreciate your patience during the upheaval. Growth is a messy process. The next several years are going to be difficult, but we want you to know that we are working hard to keep the impact and disruption to a minimum. There will be more cranes, trucks and dirt in the near future but ultimately there will also be more trees, green space and amenities. Our goal is to ensure the safety of staff, students and visitors during construction and to minimize inconvenience and problems whenever possible. With your assistance, we have been able to resolve problems in the past and are confident we can do so in the future.

Pedestrian safety, particularly for people who park near the Medical Biosciences Building (MBB) construction site, is of special concern. To this end, we have asked Parking and Transportation Services and Kraus-Anderson, the MBB construction manager, to take extra safety precautions. Kraus Anderson has installed a fence around their entire construction site. This fence extends along the west end of the Northstar parking lot to prevent pedestrians from accidently entering the construction staging and crane swing areas. Pedestrians will be directed by signs to exit the parking lot via a new concrete walkway to the 6th Street sidewalk. The pedestrian crossings at the entrance and exit to the MBB construction site on 6th Street will be signed, and a STOP sign will be installed at the truck exit. The sidewalk in front of the MBB site will be cleaned regularly. A map showing these improvements is online.

Contract and daily parking arrangements during this next phase of construction will remain as they are today. Parking and Transportation Services works hard to balance the needs of all its customers on campus. The parking lots closest to the center of campus, those to the west of MTRF/LRB and across the street from CMRR, will remain daily rate lots available for all students and staff. The Northstar lot will continue to serve as a contract parking lot for faculty and staff. The one change to the current arrangement is that MBB construction workers will also be parking in the Northstar Lot. The portion of the Northstar Lot where the Kraus-Anderson workers will be encouraged to park is shown on the map mentioned above. People walking to and from all of the parking lots in this area of campus after hours are encouraged to use the University's Escort Service (624-Walk).

We will continue to keep you informed as we move forward with the Medical Bioscience Building and with the other new AHC research building projects being proposed for this area of campus. In the mean time, we would ask that faculty and staff in MTRF/LRB and CMRR direct all non-parking concerns and questions to David Lee at leexx007@,umn.edu. Contract parking questions should be addressed to Victoria Nelson in Parking and Transportation Services at 626-7275.
