PTS Posts Signs Improving Turn Safety Inside Parking Ramps
Posted: 9/12/11

You asked, PTS answered.  Many contract parkers have asked PTS to take action when vehicles park in University ramps and garages and exceed the space allowed.  This can be a specific safety issue at the ends of aisles when traffic is turning around corners.

PTS has started posting "Small Vehicle Parking" signs (like these <link here>) in parking facilities.  East River Road Garage has been signed at the ends of aisles.  Washington Avenue Ramp and Oak Street Ramp are next on the list as PTS staff make their way to all of the U's ramps and garages.

The University of Minnesota Police Department (UMPD) will enforce these spaces with written citations for failure to park according to posted signs.  Officers will routinely check for compliance. PTS will also notify UMPD of customer calls when vehicles are not following the posted signs.

Safety and improved visibility for drivers are the primary goals for this initiative.

West Bank Traffic Flow Changes Around September 21
Posted: 9/20/11

Construction related to the Central Corridor Light Rail Transit line will mean important changes this week for motorists who drive to and through the West Bank of the University of Minnesota campus.

Currently on the West Bank, all vehicles travel on the south side of Washington Avenue and use the south Cedar Avenue ramps to move through the area. Beginning Wednesday, traffic will begin to shift to the north side of Washington Avenue and use the north Cedar Avenue ramps. The changes and lane shifts are significant, and drivers should travel through the area with caution and follow the marked routes carefully.

Metro Transit bus stops will be available for westbound buses at Willey Hall and on the northwest Cedar Avenue ramp, and a bus stop for eastbound buses will be available at Blegen Hall. The University of Minnesota bus stop will continue to be available at Willey Hall.

Maps showing the changes and a complete Minneapolis update are available at the Central Corridor website. While you are there, be sure to sign up for weekly e-mail updates from the Central Corridor staff.

Central Corridor Light Rail Work Begins On Campus
Updated: 2/21/11

Traffic changes will occur the last weekend in February around the Washington Avenue Bridge so preparations can begin to replace the vehicle deck and add tracks for Central Corridor Light Rail Transit trains.

On Feb. 26 and 27, crews will remove medians at the east and west ends of the bridge and on Washington Avenue near Church Street and near Cedar and 19th Avenues in preparation for traffic controls that will be installed March 2. Traffic will be reduced from two lanes each way down to one lane each way on the north side of Washington from Cedar to Church. Traffic west of Cedar and east of Church will have normal traffic patterns of two lanes each way. Crews then will erect equipment so construction can begin on the bridge in late March.

One lane will be maintained in each direction on the bridge during construction. Traffic will be restricted to one lane in each direction on the north side of the bridge while crews remove the vehicle deck on the south side this year. In 2012, traffic will be shifted to the newly built south side while the vehicle deck is removed on the north side.

Cyclists and pedestrians on the upper deck of the bridge will use the north side this year and be shifted to the south side in 2012.

Meanwhile, crews have been working on the piers under the bridge off of West River Parkway in Minneapolis since late 2010. There are no anticipated impacts from this work to pedestrian and bike paths along the parkway nor are there anticipated impacts to those traveling on the bridge or under it via the parkway.

Work in 2011 and 2012 will include adding girders and other design elements to strengthen the bridge.

Heavy construction on Washington Avenue on the East Bank will begin after classes end in mid-May. At that time, vehicles will be removed from Wasington Avenue between Pleasant and Oak Streets. The road will be converted into a transit-pedestrian mall from Pleasant to Walnut streets with two tracks in the middle and one lane on each side for emergency vehicles and cyclists. This work will continue through 2012.
