Biker Safety
Consideration... caution... courtesy... These words should be at the top of everyone's mind as we all travel in the same space we call campus.

We all want to be safe. That means watching out for one another.

Sidewalks are paved for walkers, not bicyclists. It can be extremely dangerous to ride through crowds of pedestrians on busy sidewalks. Please don't do it.

This is a City of Minneapolis law, not just a University rule. "No person shall ride a bicycle upon a sidewalk within a business district..." The University of Minnesota Police will write out citations for bicyclists riding on the sidewalks, so be ware.

Feel free to walk your bike on any sidewalk around campus (free from fear of getting a ticket) and when riding, use bike lanes and try to avoid collisions with pedestrians. Make their day - as well as yours.

Helmets & Headlights
Is your life worth $20? We think so.

  • In the U.S., 600 accidents annually result in deaths directly linked to head trauma.
  • Nearly 50% of bicycle fatalities occur after dark.
  • Minnesota statute requires all cyclists to illuminate their bikes after dark. A white front light must be visible from a distance of 500 ft. with a red reflector on the rear. For better visibility, use a red light on the rear in addition to the reflector.

All University students, staff or faculty can ride safe by purchasing a helmet and headlight set for $20 at the Pharmacy in Boynton Health Service . Items are also sold separately. Simply present your U Card.

Call 612-624-7655 to verify the items are in stock.
E-mail your questions to biking@umn.edu.

Helmets and Headlights is supported by PTS and Boynton Health Service.

Theft Prevention Tips
  • Always lock your bike.
  • Bring an inexpensive bike to campus.
  • For maximum protection, use a U-lock.
  • If you have quick-release hubs, don’t forget to lock your wheels and seatpost.
  • Park in a well-traveled, well-lit area.
  • Write down your bike’s serial number for matching in case of theft.
  • Alert the police of suspicious activity.

Register your property through the UMPD Valuables Registry
