AHC VP Search Update
Email from President Kaler to all faculty and staff, systemwide
March 20, 2013
I am pleased to update you on the national search for a new vice president for the health sciences and dean of the Medical School at the University of Minnesota.
As part of the external review of the University's health sciences this past year, I decided to maintain the combined positions of vice president and dean. I believe that this leadership model allows the University to have a strong dean of the Medical School while ensuring the strength and vitality of all of the health sciences colleges and schools through the careful coordination and support of the clinical interface across disciplines, interprofessional education, and interdisciplinary research. As with any search process, I will be seeking input from a broad set of key stakeholders on the roles and responsibilities of the position, including the qualifications, experience, and leadership characteristics that this person will need to be successful.
I have appointed a core search committee, selecting individuals to ensure broad representation from across the University and externally. Members of the search committee include:
Leon Assael, D.M.D.--dean, School of Dentistry, and committee co-chair
Bobbi Daniels, M.D.--vice dean for clinical affairs, Medical School; CEO, University of Minnesota Physicians; professor, Department of Medicine, Medical School; and committee co-chair
Karen Hsiao Ashe, M.D., Ph.D.--professor, Departments of Neurology and Neuroscience, Medical School; and director, N. Bud Grossman Center for Memory Research and Care
Lynne Bemis, Ph.D.--associate professor and head, Department of Biomedical Sciences, Medical School, University of Minnesota Duluth
Bruce Blazar, M.D.--associate vice president for AHC Clinical Research; Regents Professor, Department of Pediatrics, Hematology-Oncology; chief, Pediatric Blood and Marrow Transplantation; director, Center for Translational Medicine; and director, Clinical and Translational Science Institute
Jim Cloyd, Pharm.D.--professor, Department of Experimental and Clinical Pharmacology, College of Pharmacy; and director, Center for Orphan Drug Research
Tom Fisher--dean, College of Design, and professor, School of Architecture
Brian Herman, Ph.D.--vice president for research
Mary Jo Kreitzer, R.N., Ph.D.--director, Center for Spirituality and Healing, and professor, School of Nursing
David Largaespada, Ph.D.--professor, Department of Genetics, Cell Biology and Development, and Department of Pediatrics, Medical School
Michael Oakes, Ph.D.--associate professor, Department of Epidemiology and Community Health, School of Public Health
James Pacala, M.D., M.S.--associate professor and associate head, Department of Family Medicine and Community Health, Medical School; and member, Faculty Consultative Committee
Bob Pohlad--member, Medical School Board of Visitors
Srirama Rao, Ph.D.--associate dean for research and professor, Department of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences, College of Veterinary Medicine; and professor, Division of Pulmonary, Allergy, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine, Department of Medicine, Medical School
Ian Reynolds--Medical School student and member, AHC Student Consultative Committee
Daniel Weisdorf, M.D.--professor, Department of Medicine, Medical School; and director, Adult Blood and Marrow Transplant Program
Carolyn Wilson, R.N., M.B.A.--president, University of Minnesota Medical Center, Fairview
Bevan Yueh, M.D., M.P.H.--professor and head, Department of Otolaryngology, Medical School
I am committed to a search process that is robust and transparent and includes consultation with the Academic Health Center, the University community, and our external partners. For that reason, I am also appointing a 24-member search advisory committee, which brings together a broad representation of leaders from within and outside the University to advise the search committee on the position description, assist the committee in sourcing and recruiting qualified and diverse candidates, and provide feedback on the final candidates during the public interview process. In addition, we will be scheduling open forums as well as dedicated listening sessions with selected key stakeholder groups to gather as much early input on the position and the search process as possible.
We are working to select a search firm to partner with the search committee in advising me regarding this search. The search committee will meet for the first time in April, when I will deliver the formal charge. It is my intention that we will also seek input on the position during the month of April, post and advertise the position before the end of this semester, recruit and assess candidates during the summer months, and invite final candidates to campus for public interviews in early fall.
If you have questions, or would like more information about the search, please contact search committee co-chairs, Dr. Leon Assael at email@example.com or Dr. Bobbi Daniels at firstname.lastname@example.org, or Kate Stuckert in the Office of Human Resources at email@example.com, for assistance.
