Norwood Teague named new director of athletics
Email to Twin Cities faculty, staff, and students
April 23, 2012
Dear Faculty, Staff, and Students,
Today I named Norwood Teague as the new athletic director for Gopher Athletics. I am thrilled to welcome Norwood to the University of Minnesota and to my senior leadership team.
Norwood is the real deal—a visionary leader who is fully committed to student athletes and their education; someone who has forged great athletic wins in a challenging environment; a relationship builder and experienced fundraiser; and a great manager.
He is currently the director of athletics for Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) and has held that position since July 2006. He has more than 20 years of experience working in intercollegiate athletics and has a master's degree in sports administration from Ohio University and a bachelor's degree in political science from the University of North Carolina.
Norwood was on campus today and met with me; the search advisory committee; and many of our coaches, faculty, and senior leaders. We came away knowing we have selected the absolute best person for this job.
We know that for many Minnesotans and, certainly, many of our half million alumni, Gopher Athletics and our facilities serve as a front door to the University. That's why it's important for intercollegiate athletics to reflect and reinforce the values of our University community: excellence, diversity, integrity, personal responsibility, and an entrepreneurial spirit.
I know that Norwood shares those values, and I am confident he will lead Gopher Athletics into its next era of integrity, academic excellence, and victory.
Please join me in extending a warm welcome to Norwood. He will begin work on July 1, pending Board of Regents approval. More information about this news can be found on the Gopher Sports website.
I want to express my sincere thanks to all 23 members of our search advisory committee, and especially to our four-person search committee, which included search co-chairs Vice President Tim Mulcahy and Professor Mary Jo Kane; alumnus John Lindahl, a close friend of Athletics; and my Chief of Staff Amy Phenix. Finally, I also want to thank Joel Maturi for his decade of outstanding service as our athletic director.
