| On February 28, 2003 Robert H. Bruininks was inaugurated as the University of Minnesota’s 15th president. Bruininks had been at the University for 35 years in a variety of positions—executive vice president and provost, dean of the College of Education and Human Development, and a professor of educational psychology. At an inauguration ceremony in Northop Memorial Auditorium, Governor Tim Pawlenty and University of Minnesota Board of Regents chair Maureen Reed presented Bruininks with the mace and medallion, symbols of University leadership.
President Bruininks selected “Advancing Knowledge: A Partner for the Public Good” as the inaugural theme because it reflects his commitment to the University’s role—in Minnesota, across the nation, and around the world. As one of the country’s top research institutions, the University discovers and imparts knowledge in all fields of human endeavor—from the arts and humanities to social and behavioral sciences and from agriculture to physics, medicine, and biological sciences. During the past century, the University has worked with many communities to advance the boundaries of human knowledge for the common good. As a result of a century and a half of commitment to teaching and learning, discovering, and public service, the University has educated the state’s citizenry, fueled its economic prosperity, and enriched the civic and cultural life for generations of Minnesotans.
