of the American Public Research University”

Reception will follow National Public Radio news correspondent Juan
Williams will moderate a panel discussion between Robert Berdahl,
chancellor of the University of California-Berkeley, and three University
of Minnesota faculty members: Anne Taylor, Medical School associate
dean and professor; Dennis Ahlburg, Carlson School of Management
associate dean and professor; and Patricia Hampl, department of
English regents professor and author. President Bob Bruininks will
participate in a question-and-answer session with Williams and the
panelists during the last hour of the program.

Event: “Day of Dialogue: Advancing Nursing’s
Influence”
Sheraton Midway, St. Paul, 8 a.m.–4 p.m.

Educators and service leaders from across the state will discuss
how to increase public understanding about nursing. Suzanne Gordon,
nursing advocate and co-author of From Silence to Voice: What Nurses
Know and Must Communicate to the Public, will be keynote speaker.

Event: National Academy of Sciences Lectureship
Series

Brian Staskawicz, University of California-Berkeley and an international
expert in the molecular basis of plant disease resistance, will speak
about “Bacterial Proteins Conferring Disease Immunity in Plants.”
His laboratory is working on genetically engineering plants for disease
resistance to reduce the use of environmentally damaging pesticides.
