The Stairway

When Eastcliff was built in 1922, the original stair hall and stair were dressed in a velvety carpet and stair runner, a luxurious accent to the dark birch and maple floors. One of the best aesthetic changes made in the summer 1997 renovation was a custom design stencil border pattern that was stained onto the landing and each stair tread. The stair risers are painted the same creamy white of the millwork, and the stained and stenciled treads look like delicate inlay reflecting the central decorative iron element of the stair rail.
All of Eastcliff's original drapery hardware was removed prior to the University's acquisition of the property in 1958. The new curved hardware on the landing, installed in the summer 1997 project, was fabricated by studying an old photograph to combine a faithful reproduction of the curved rod and rings. It is decorated with a wrought iron lady slipper, the state flower of Minnesota.
