Transforming the U update

September 9, 2005

To: The University Community
From: President Bob Bruininks
Subject: Transforming the U update

Dear University students, faculty, and staff:

Welcome back to those of you returning to the University of Minnesota, and welcome to those who have recently joined our community! We have an exciting year ahead of us, and I want to bring you up-to-date on the strategic positioning process and our community's goal of transforming the University into one of the top three public research universities in the world.

Many of you know that over the past year, we worked together as a community to identify a goal for this university that will enable us to turn difficult global demographic and economic challenges into promising opportunity. The shared vision of excellence articulated by the University community through the strategic positioning process, and overwhelmingly approved by the Board of Regents in June, is a blueprint for transformation.

If we are to reach our goal of becoming one of the top three public research universities in the world within a decade, the numerous intricate recommendations of the blueprint must be effectively implemented while honoring our mission and protecting the people and legacies of the University.

Thirty-four task forces have been appointed to ensure the success of this next critical stage. The names of task force chairs and cochairs are posted on the Transforming the U Web site at http://www.umn.edu/transforming_the_u. The task forces will meet on September 16 to formally begin their work.

I want to thank the more than 500 of you who volunteered to serve on a task force or who nominated other candidates. Your willingness to contribute your time and talents to the work ahead honors the University.

The initial work of the task forces will involve extensive consultation with colleagues within the University and greater community. I urge each of you, especially those who expressed interest but were not appointed to a task force, to share your ideas with team leaders, task force chairs, and task force members.

I look forward to our continuing work together to transform the University of Minnesota into one of the top three public research universities in the world.

Sincerely,

President Robert Bruininks
