Eastcliff: The Official Residence
Two black and white illustrations of the Eastcliff residence.

Eastcliff is the official home of the president of the University of Minnesota. Located on the east bank of the Mississippi River in St. Paul, this colonial revival-style home was designed by Clarence H. Johnston Sr., Minnesota’s state architect. It was built in 1922 by lumber baron Edward Brooks. In 1958, the Brooks family gave the home to the University. Since then, six presidents and their families have made Eastcliff their home.

A University landmark, Eastcliff earned a spot on the National Register of Historic Places in the spring of 2000. More than 100 dinners, receptions, and award ceremonies are hosted each year in the home.

Eastcliff fun facts:

  • More than 7500 guests visited the home during the 2004- 2005 academic year
  • Famous past house guests included Katharine Hepburn, Helen Keller, Joe Louis, Serge Rachmaninoff, and Clark Gable
  • Eastcliff’s 20 rooms cover almost 10,000 square feet
  • With its nine wood-burning fireplaces, a different kind of wood in each paneled room, and unusually thick custom-cut clapboard siding, the home makes a grand display of its lumbering heritage.
  • Designer C.H. Johnston, Sr., also designed Glensheen, the Congdon mansion in Duluth—also owned by the University.
