I'm Bob Bruininks, and I'm delighted to welcome you to the University of Minnesota, one of the nation's premier research universities and a great place to learn and work. As Minnesota's only land-grant university, we bear a unique historical obligation to serve the greater good. Our strong sense of public responsibility is seen in our commitments to affordable access and timely success of our students; to sustainability and responsible stewardship of public resources; and to sharing new knowledge and practical solutions to real-world problems. Since its founding more than 150 years ago, the University of Minnesota has made essential contributions to the economic and cultural vitality of the state and nation. Our mission of education, research, and public engagement; our academic scope; and our statewide presence are marks of distinction and position us well to address the critical problems of this new century. But the new century also demands new thinking, and we're in the midst of transformative change en route to becoming one of the top three public research universities in the world. It's an audacious goal, we know—be a part of it, and experience the only university in the world that can call itself Minnesota.
