2009 H1N1 (swine) fluOn June 11, 2009 the World Health Organization (WHO) raised the pandemic alert level to 6, formally declaring the start of the 2009 influenza pandemic. The increase in pandemic alert level reflects the continued geographic spread across the globe; it does not mean that the H1N1 influenza virus has become more virulent. This announcement was expected. While it doesn’t change our planning and response efforts at the University of Minnesota, it confirms the importance of our continued attention to this issue and preparations to respond to whatever may evolve in the months ahead. Visit the 2009 H1N1 (swine) flu page for the latest in University information. A Safe U is a Safe YouThe University of Minnesota is committed to a culture of safety. We have many strategies in place to create a safe U, a few of which are highlighted below. But we ask that you also do your part. Safety and security is a shared responsibility, and only by working together can we create an environment intolerant of crime, a University ready to respond, and a well-informed community. The purpose of this Web site is not emergency notification. Rather, it is an education and information resource to help you understand how the University prepares for and responds to safety, health, and weather emergencies. It also explains what part you can play in these endeavors. Please review the important information about personal safety; familiarize yourself with initiatives such as TXT-U, 624-WALK, and 301-SAFE; and learn how you can respond to many different types of emergencies. In the event of an emergency, the University uses multiple methods of emergency notification to inform the campus community and general public about the nature of the emergency, about what is being done, and about what you can do. Take the time to familiarize yourself with the various ways you can receive emergency notification and information. Be safe. Be prepared. We have done much to promote safety and security on campus. Please help by doing your part. Together we can ensure a safe U. |
