When to Call for Help

When to Call 911

  • Fire
  • Medical emergency
  • Crime in progress
  • Bomb threat
  • Hazardous material spills after hours (4:30 p.m. to 7:45 a.m.)

Please Note: If you are calling 911 from campus on a cell phone, immediately tell the dispatcher that you are calling from the University of Minnesota and you will be connected to the University of Minnesota Police Department.


When to Call the Department of Environmental Health and Safety (DEHS)

During business hours DEHS should be called for:

  • Chemical spills and/or exposures
  • Biohazard spills and/or exposures
  • Radiation spills and/or exposures

Provide the following information:

  • What type of problem or injury
  • Where
    • Location, including building name and address
    • Room number and floor
  • How
    • Describe, step-by-step, how the emergency happened
  • Who
    • Information about the victims
    • Number of ill, injured, or threatened
    • Approximate age(s)
  • Your contact information, including a phone number

Stay on the phone, as emergency instructions may be given or more information needed.
