Campus Security Act (Clery Act)

These statistics are part of the University of Minnesota's compliance with the *Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act *(informally known as the "Clery Act"). More information on the Clery Act can be found at (www.securityoncampus.org/schools/cleryact/).

This information is published annually in brochure format by the University and made available to all current and prospective students, and to staff and faculty. Statistics are compiled by the University police department in consultation with the St. Paul and Minneapolis police departments and a wide range of University personnel, including the dean of students, faculty/staff advisers to student groups, Housing & Residential Life, Student Judicial Affairs, Athletics, the Aurora Center, Parking and Transportation Services, and Recreational Sports.

Statistics from the past three calendar years can be found in the Crime Statistic charts for 2004, 2005 and 2006. Please review the definitions used in categorizing different crimes and locations.

Areas included in these statistics:

Buildings and Grounds

The University controls access to its space by using traditional key systems, electronic card reader systems and alarms. Individual responsibility and accountability is the primary method used to ensure that authorized people request, receive and return control keys or cards as their duties dictate. Anyone duplicating, possessing, or using access control keys or cards to University premises without authorization will be subject to disciplinary actions from the University, or criminal charges where appropriate (University of Minnesota Policy 3.10.2).

Most campus facilities are accessible during the normal business hours on weekdays and for limited hours on weekends. Outside doors of newer University buildings are equipped with electronic card access control systems. Many older buildings are being retrofitted with such systems.

More than 200 campus phones are available for emergency, medical, and service-related calls and are located outside and housed in yellow boxes. The campus also features 20 easily recognized blue-light 9-1-1 phones.

Parking Facilities

Parking and Transportation Services continually improves on-campus ramp, garage, and lot safety. Improvements include brighter lighting, more telephones, and state-of-the-art security systems. Most ramps and garages have closed-circuit television monitors. University police officers, student security monitors, and parking safety assistants routinely patrol ramps and surface lots. For more information, call 612-626-PARK (7275).

Residence Halls

Front lobby and entrance areas are open to the public on weekdays during the regular business hours (8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.). Living areas remain locked 24 hours a day. Guests and visitors may access a residence hall living area only when escorted by a resident of that hall.

Sorority and Fraternity Houses

All sorority and fraternity houses are located off campus and therefore fall under the jurisdiction of the Minneapolis or St. Paul police departments. The University police department offers sororities and fraternities seminars on crime prevention, personal safety and alcohol awareness.
