The University of Minnesota Police Department partners with members of the community to maintain a safe and secure campus. We recognize those citizens who assist in preventing, stopping, and solving crime with special awards throughout the year. We also recognize outstanding performance by the officers and staff of the the UMPD.

UMPD Citizens Awards

On June 27, 2012 we recognized Khalid Ali, Mohamed Hassan, Said Abdirashid Jeylani, Hussein Mohamed, Abdi Nur and Guled Omar who are from 17-18 years of age with Life Saving Awards. They were walking across the Washington Aveune Bridge on campus to attend the high school graduation for friends on June 5th, 2012. While others on the bridge that day watched, this group of young men acted. They all grabbed the male trying to go over the railing of the bridge, guided him over to the enclosure, calmed him down, and summoned UMPD. When officers arrived he was calmed down and was easy for officers to transport. This incident is a reminder that when the community works together with the UMPD it benefits all.
