UPDATED CRIME ALERT: The University of Minnesota Police Department (UMPD) continues to investigate an attempted robbery that occurred in Anderson Hall on the West Bank on Monday, November 11, at 2:46 p.m., and is asking for the public's help in identifying a person of interest.
The original Crime Alert included a photo of an individual that is no longer a person of interest in this investigation. UMPD has identified that person and cleared him of any wrong doing.
The robbery victim -- a university student -- was studying in a hallway when the suspect approached with a handgun. When the suspect demanded the victim's laptop, the victim screamed and the suspect fled the area. The victim was not harmed in the incident.
Campus security cameras captured the photos below of a male running through Blegen Hall one minute after the incident. Investigators consider him a person of interest.

ORIGINAL CRIME ALERT: On Monday, November 11th at approximately 2:45 p.m. a University of Minnesota student was the victim of an attempted armed robbery. The incident occurred in Anderson Hall on the West Bank.
The victim was sitting in a hallway when the suspect approached, displayed a handgun and demanded her laptop. The victim screamed and the suspect fled. No shots were fired, and the victim was not injured.
University of Minnesota Police issued a campus-wide TXT-U alert advising people to shelter in place on the West Bank. Police conducted a thorough search of the West Bank tunnel system and buildings. Police also examined footage from area security cameras and determined the suspect was seen leaving campus immediately after the event. A follow-up TXT-U lifting the shelter in place order was sent at 4:05 p.m.
The suspect is described as a black male, approximately 20 years old, six feet tall and wearing a black, puffy hooded jacket. University Police obtained the image below from area security cameras and believe the person in the photo is the suspect they are seeking. Anyone with information should contact the University of Minnesota Police Department at 612-624-COPS (2677).

* When threatened with a weapon, it's best not to resist. Your personal safety is more important than a loss of property.
* Always be aware of your surroundings.
* Walk in well-lit areas and don't walk alone. If you can't find someone to walk with, call the Campus Escort service at 612-624-WALK for a free security escort.
* Carry minimal amounts of valuables.
* Keep written records of valuables, including model and serial numbers, in a safe place.
* Call 911 immediately if you are the victim or witness to a crime.
* Document information about the suspect for police (i.e. clothing descriptions, facial features, piercings or tattoos, speech, etc.).
