Eric E. Stafne, D.D.S., M.S.D.

Dr. Stafne is a Clinical Professor, Division of Periodontology, Department of Developmental and Surgical Sciences in the School of Dentistry, University of Minnesota. Before coming to the University full time, he was in private practice limited to periodontics for 25 years in St. Paul. Dr. Stafne has served as president of the St. Paul District Dental Society, Minnesota Association of Periodontists, Minnesota Division of the American Cancer Society, Upper Midwest Section of the American College of Dentists, and the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry Century Club.

Among awards and honors that Dr. Stafne has received are Fellowship in the American College of Dentists 1970, Fellowship in the International College of Dentists 1977, American Cancer Society National Division Award 1989, School of Dentistry Teacher of the Year 1990 and 1993, St. Paul District Dental Society Outstanding Service Award 1995, Michael J. Loupe Award for Excellence and Innovation in Dental Education 1996, the Distinguished Dental Alumnus Award 2000, the Lynn Smith Award for Excellence in Tobacco Control 2001, and the 2006 Minnesota Dental Association Guest of Honor.

Dr. Stafne served on the ASSIST (American Stop Smoking Intervention Study) coordinating and advisory committee of the Minnesota coalition. He also served as co-chair of the health care subcommittee on the Minnesota tobacco settlement foundations Cessation Advisory Committee. Dr. Stafne was a member of the planning committee of the Association for the Treatment of Tobacco Use and Dependence and is on the Board of Directors of the Minnesota Smoke-Free Coalition.

At the present time, Dr. Stafne is Director of the Tobacco Cessation Program and Clinic at the School of Dentistry. He is involved with tobacco dependence treatment research and is a member of the Society for Research on Nicotine and Tobacco. Dr. Stafne also directs an individual tobacco cessation counseling clinic at the School of Dentistry. In addition to his School of Dentistry tobacco prevention and cessation lectures and seminars, Dr. Stafne gives training workshops in tobacco control to various local, state and national organizations and health care providers' offices and clinics.
