Making Links

Before you can link to anything within the Parent website, the content has to already exist on the site.

For example, if you add a new page in the Health and Safety section, you must make that new page first, then the link from the Health and Safety page to the new page can be made.

Choosing the Link Style and Making the Link

  1. On the page that you'd like to make a link, go into the content editor and highlight the text for the link (see Links in the Style Guide for help in determining what text you should use for a link).
  2. After highlighting the text for the link, click on the link icon (the globe with the chain) in the toolbar (see figure A).
  3. The Link Wizard will appear (see figure B). You have three different choices to make a link. The choices are explained below.

Link to a section

Use this option when linking to another page within UMContent.

  1. Click on the radio button in the "Choose type of link" dialog box (figure B.) to select "Link to a section," then click on the blue arrow to the left of the radio button to move to the next screen.
  2. In the "Choose a section" dialog box (figure C.), find the page that you'd like to link to. Click on it, click "Finish" in the bottom right. Your link has been made.

Link to a file (PDF)

Use this option when linking to a PDF. Make sure your PDF is in UMContent before making the link.

  1. Click on the radio button in the "Choose type of link" dialog box (figure B.) to select "Link to a file," then click on the blue arrow to the left of the radio button to move to the next screen.
  2. In the "Choose content file" dialog box (figure D.), click "Existing file from server."
  3. On the next screen, find the PDF that you'd like to link to (See figure E. It should be at the top of the list if you've just uploaded it. If it's not, you will need to search for it by name.).
  4. Select PDFFigure E.

  5. Click on the "Select" button and your link to the PDF has been made.

Link to the following URL

Use this option when linking to a website outside of the Parent site. Remember that the URL you use must be a full URL beginning with http.

  1. Click on the radio button in the "Choose type of link" dialog box (figure B.) to select the "Link to the following URL" radio button.
  2. Enter the link in the field (the easiest way to do this is to copy the link URL from your browser's address bar and paste it in the field).
  3. Click "Finish" in the lower right and your link will be made.
