Talking finances with your student
From the 2011 Parent Orientation Newsletter
College students get messages about credit cards, spending, budgeting, and debt from the media, from popular culture, and from their friends. It is important that students also get messages from home to help them make responsible decisions about their finances. Now there’s an online course for parents that includes talking points as well as stories about how students and parents have successfully navigated their finances during college.
The course was created by the University Parent Program along with University of Minnesota Extension, the College of Education and Human Development, and the Department of Family Social Science.

Insurance
Ask your insurance representative if your homeowner’s insurance covers your student’s belongings on campus. Most insurance companies can provide a policy rider for students who live in residence halls.
