University of Minnesota students and graduates who are applying for a position in the government that requires clearance, or entrance to professional schools, or wishing to obtain certification to practice law often will require verification from our office about the student’s disciplinary history while in attendance at the University.
In order to expedite the process, we’ve put together the following information about our policies regarding release of student information:
In our day-to-day operations, the Office for Student Conduct and Academic Integrity (OSCAI) follows the Regents’ Policy on Access to Student Records. This policy can be found at this link: http://www1.umn.edu/regents/policies/administrative/Student_Education_Records.pdf
If you are from a government or other external (i.e. non-University) agency seeking a verification of a current or former student, we require a consent for release of information from the student and also require the following:
A photo ID accompanied by a business card. If you have a badge number, we will document that as well. If no business card is available we need to make a copy of your driver’s license and have you fax your request from your office on official department or company letterhead.
We cannot always provide information upon immediate request; however, we are usually able to provide it within 48 hours of having the necessary documentation.
Asking for a photo ID and business card and/or faxing your request on official letterhead insures that the University of Minnesota is providing information to an authentic representative of a United States government agency or another licensed organization requesting information. However, once we have your name and agency on file, you may drop off or fax future student release forms and we will call back promptly.
