OIT has a license with Symantec Corp. to provide its AntiVirus® and Symantec Client Security® (SCS) software to eligible students, faculty, and staff of all campuses of the University of Minnesota.
The software may be used on departmental computers and student, faculty, and staff personal computers, provided the following conditions are met.
You may install Symantec Client Security (including Symantec AntiVirus):
Alumni and retired faculty are not eligible to download or purchase this software as part of the University's agreement.
To download this software, you will need your University Internet ID and password.
These Symantec products contain a LiveUpdate component that connects via the Internet to Symantec and checks for updates to the software, including virus definitions and occasional product fixes. Without the latest virus definitions, your computer is not protected against the latest viruses and malware threats.
After you install the Symantec software, please check its LiveUpdate settings. We recommend you set its update schedule to attempt an update every day at a time when your computer is likely to be on and connected to the Internet.
This is the AntiVirus product required on computers in the residence halls (ResNet).
You may download the software or purchase it on campus for a small media fee.

After you install the full SCS product you will be presented with various screens as you attempt to connect to various services on the network. You will also be informed when something attempts to connect to your computer. In general, it is best to follow the suggested action. However, there may be services for which you will need to change the default and either accept or reject the attempted connection. If you have questions about any of the options that are presented please call 1-HELP (612-301-4357) for assistance. Be cautious in using the personal firewall. It is possible to get the firewall set to a state such that you will be unable to communicate at all.
