The Office of Information Technology (OIT) is embarking on a Voice over IP (VoIP) initiative using Aastra/Intecom technology in order to utilize our current Private Branch Exchange (PBX) telecommunications system on the Twin Cities campus. Installing VoIP communication infrastructure allows OIT to provide voice services to University locations that are unsupported by traditional telephone service. This project is providing VoIP service to several University organizations that have requested inclusion in the University communications infrastructure, while saving on costs associated with Centrex and Long Distance services.
VoIP implementation is not meant to replace traditional telephone service on the Twin Cities campus. It is a means by which places such as Rochester, Arboretum, Extension Services, and other off-site locations may benefit from shared infrastructural resources.
