If you choose to reduce your hours or job share, your benefits may be affected.

Medical, Dental, and Basic Life

You are eligible for medical, dental, and basic life insurance with a contribution from the University if you have an appointment that is 75% to 100%. If you have an appointment that is 50% to 74%, you are eligible for medical, dental and basic life insurance through the University, but you pay the full cost of the premium. If you are in an appointment that is less than 50%, you are not eligible for medical, dental, or basic life insurance coverage through the University.

Vacation and Sick Leave

To earn vacation and sick leave, your appointment must be one of the following:

  • Civil Service/Bargaining Unit: 50-100% time appointment
  • Faculty/Academic Staff: 67-100% time, 12-month (A term) appointment

Appointments that are less than these do not earn vacation and sick leave. If you are currently in a position that is eligible to earn vacation leave, and you change your appointment to one that is not eligible to earn vacation leave, you may have your accrued vacation leave balance paid to you.

Retirement

Civil Service and Bargaining Unit (CS/BU) employees with appointments of 50% or greater have full mandatory participation in the Minnesota State Retirement System (MSRS). CS/BU employees with appointments that are less than 50% have mandatory participation that is prorated based on appointment percentage.

Faculty and P&A employees are eligible to participate in the Faculty Retirement Plan with appointments that are at least 9 months and 67% or greater. Faculty and P&A employees that hold an appointment between 67% to 99% time are entitled to prorated participation. Faculty and P&A employees with appointments of less than 67% are not eligible to participate in the Faculty Retirement Program.

You may continue to participate or elect to participate in the voluntary retirement plans - the Optional Retirement Plan and the 457 Deferred Compensation Plan. You can also change your contribution amount at any time of year.

Flexible Spending Accounts

You are eligible to participate in a Flexible Spending Account (Health Care Reimbursement Account and/or Dependent Care Reimbursement Account) if you are scheduled to work 17.5 hours or more a week for 6 months or more each year. If you reduce your appointment to less than this, you will become ineligible to participate in a Flexible Spending Account and your pre-tax contributions to the account will end. For information regarding when your eligibility would officially end and what would happen to any remaining balance in your account, call Employee Benefits at 612-624-9090 or 800-756-2363, press 3.
