Group Strength Express and Heart Rate Express

Get Money Back for Regular Exercise

Participate in an eight-week strength or cardiovascular training class and get the entire cost of the class returned to you. Only UPlan Medical Program employees are eligible for reimbursement, and may only receive one reimbursement per lifetime per class.

Group Strength and Heart Rate Express are open only to policy-holder employees who are covered by the UPlan Medical Program, not spouses or same-sex domestic partners, even if they are a University of Minnesota employee.

Attend 13 of the 16 classes, complete the pre- and post-course fitness assessment, and get the $199 cost of the course returned to you. One lifetime reimbursement per category.

You do not need to be a member of the University fitness centers (Minneapolis Rec Center or St. Paul Gym) to participate in these classes. You will need to present a U Card to enter the facility.

Category 1: Group Strength Express Classes

Option 1: Circuit

  • more applicable for beginner participants
  • complete a strength machine and cardiovascular interval circuit during the first 20-25 minutes of each session
  • spend the remaining 20-25 minutes of your session focusing on full body strength and endurance, core training and flexibility


Option 2: Kettlebell

  • more applicable for intermediate and advanced participants
  • complete a 5-10 minute dynamic warm up, a 25-35 minute training session using kettlebells as the primary modality, and 5-10 minutes of core conditioning and flexibility training
  • improve muscular strength and power through exercises such as the kettlebell squat and swing


Within both formats you will:

  • meet for 45 minutes, twice a week, for eight weeks
  • strengthen your muscles, enhance your cardiovascular fitness, and learn the basics of a balanced exercise program
  • receive individual attention from a certified personal trainer
  • work out in a small group under the instruction of a Certified Personal Trainer
  • complete pre- and post-class fitness assessments to measure muscular strength, muscular endurance, flexibility, and body composition
     

Category 2: Heart Rate Express Classes

Currently we offer one class format within this category. In this class, you will:

  • meet for 45 minutes, twice a week, for eight weeks
  • spend 30-35 minutes of each class focusing on improving cardiovascular training through treadmill-based or cycling-based training.
  • spend 10-15 minutes of each class focusing on core/abdominal strengthening and overall flexibility
  • train in a small group under the instruction of a Certified Personal Trainer
  • complete pre- and post-class fitness assessments to measure cardiovascular endurance and body composition

How to Enroll in Group Strength or Heart Rate Express

Step 1. Complete a Health History Questionnaire (pdf)

Step 2. Mail via campus or U.S. mail the completed Health History Questionnaire to:

IMPORTANT: The questionnaire must arrive by U.S. mail at the above address by Wednesday, June 4, 2014.

To protect the health information and privacy of registrants, questionnaires delivered in-person, by fax, or via email will not be accepted.

The Health History Questionnaire requests prospective participants to indicate which of the scheduled classes are the top three preferred classes based on the date, time, and location of the class being offered. See schedule below.

Step 3. Create an account to receive your reimbursement (opens new window).

You must have an online account to receive your reimbursement. To set up the online account you will need to provide:

  • Seven-digit U of M employee ID number
  • Routing number of your financial institution and checking/savings account number (found on a check or deposit slip)
  • As a UPlan member, you may be reimbursed for this class just one time while actively employed by the University

Group Strength Express and Heart Rate Express: The Basics

Note: If you have been accepted for participation in a strength or cardio class, a representative from the University Recreation and Wellness Center will contact you prior to your pre-class fitness assessment and first class session.

Starting the Class

  • Your personal trainer will contact you to arrange a one-on-one meeting to discuss your fitness goals and the results of a fitness pre-class assessment.
  • You will pay $199 for the class with a credit card, check, or in cash on the day of your one-on-one meeting. The $199 fee will not be refunded if you are not able to complete the class.
  • Please note that you may be reimbursed once for a strength program (GSX) and once for a cardio program (HRX). If you have received reimbursement for both a strength and cardio program, you may participate again in any program for a non-reimbursable fee of $75.

During the Eight-week Class

  • You will attend a 45 minute class, twice a week. You may use either your UCard or the biometric hand scanners (once enrolled) to enter the facility.

Completing the Class and Getting Your Reimbursement

  • Meet with your personal trainer one-on-one to complete a post-class fitness assessment and evaluate the course.
  • After completing the pre-and post-assessments and attending 13 of the 16 weekly classes, your $199 reimbursement will be electronically deposited into your checking/savings account within six weeks of course completion. This is provided that you have met all the attendance requirements for the course.

Earn wellness points with Wellness My Way

When you successfully complete a strength training or cardiovascular training course and are financially reimbursed for your effort you may want to also earn 50 wellness points for your participation in the program. Wellness My Way is a self-directed approach for UPlan members to accomplish a personal wellness goal and earn points toward the Wellness Points program. Group Strength Express qualifies as one of the options UPlan members have to keep fit and earn wellness points when they enroll in Wellness My Way.
