Group Strength Express and Heart Rate Express

Brief Overview

  • Earn 50 wellness points

General Information

Group Strength Express (GSX) and Heart Rate Express (HRX) classes are open to all University employees and are led by Certified Personal Trainers who provide modifications and variable intensity options depending on your physical ability.

Classes meet twice per week for 10 weeks (which includes pre- and post-fitness assessments) and are 45 minutes in length. Class sizes are typically 4-8 people.

UPlan members taking the course for the first time do not need to have a membership to the Recreation & Wellness Center or St. Paul Gym in order to participate, but ID is still required.

Earn Wellness Points

When you attend at least 13 of the 16 classes, you will earn 50 wellness points for participating in the program. After completion, please allow 6-8 weeks for those points to reflect in your StayWell Online profile.

Note:
You may earn a maximum of 50 wellness points for the 2014-2015 program year for participating in a University-sponsored wellness course like GSX or HRX. You may earn an additional 50 points by participating in a self-directed wellness activity on your own.

Costs

First-time participation in GSX or HRX is $199, but that cost can be fully reimbursed to you if you are eligible and complete the course requirements.

UPlan members taking a course and eligible for the $199 fee reimbursement do not need to have a membership to the Recreation & Wellness Center or St. Paul Gym in order to participate, but ID is still required. All other non-reimbursement participants must purchase a facility membership at the location of their course.


Reimbursement

University employees who are UPlan members are eligible for reimbursement. Employees who are covered as a dependent on their spouse's or parent's UPlan benefits, even though they are University of Minnesota employees, are not eligible for reimbursement. 

If you're eligible for reimbursement, attend 13 of the 16 classes and complete the pre- and post-class fitness assessment to receive full reimbursement. One lifetime reimbursement is allowed for one class in the GSX category and for one class in the HRX category. If you take a second class in the same category, you will not be reimbursed.


Group Strength Express Category

Class Option 1: Circuit

  • Applies more for beginner participants
  • Complete a strength machine and cardiovascular interval circuit during the first 20-25 minutes of each session
  • Spend the remaining 20-25 minutes of your session focusing on full body strength and endurance, core training, and flexibility

Class Option 2: Kettlebells

  • Applies more for intermediate and advanced participants
  • Complete a 5-10 minute dynamic warm up, a 25-35 minute training session using kettlebells as the primary modality, and 5-10 minutes of core conditioning and flexibility training
  • Improve muscular strength and power through exercises such as the kettlebell squat and swing

In both classes you will:

  • Meet for 45 minutes, twice a week, for eight weeks
  • Strengthen your muscles, enhance your cardiovascular fitness, and learn the basics of a balanced exercise program
  • Receive individual attention from a certified personal trainer
  • Work out in a small group under the instruction of a Certified Personal Trainer
  • Complete pre- and post-class fitness assessments to measure muscular strength, muscular endurance, flexibility, and body composition
     

Heart Rate Express Category

Class Option 1: Treadmill Interval Training

Class Option 2: Cycling (offered only in St. Paul)

In both classes, you will:

  • Meet for 45 minutes, twice a week, for eight weeks
  • Spend 30-35 minutes of each class focusing on improving cardiovascular training through either treadmill-based or cycling-based training.
  • Spend 10-15 minutes of each class focusing on core/abdominal strengthening and overall flexibility
  • Train in a small group under the instruction of a Certified Personal Trainer
  • Complete pre- and post-class fitness assessments to measure cardiovascular endurance and body composition

IMPORTANT: Registration forms received after January 23, 2015, will not be accepted and will be destroyed to protect personal health information.
