Update about cohort-based leadership programs:

From 2001-2012, the Office of Human Resources sponsored the President’s Emerging Leaders program. During 2013, the President’s Excellence in Leadership program was piloted, which targeted mid-level leaders, primarily directors and assistant directors.
Much has been learned from those cohort experiences. Peer institutions have been contacted to discover what they are doing in the area of leadership development, especially using cohorts. Over the summer and into the fall, discussions will continue with University senior leaders to determine how to enhance cohort-based experiences and all of the OHR leadership development programs while best aligning with the strategic direction of the U.

PEL 2013-14

2013 PEL participants

Upon completion of the President’s Excellence in Leadership program, participants will demonstrate improvement in the following six leadership competencies:

  • Managing change
  • Advancing efficiency
  • Balancing quality, risk, and speed
  • Fostering collaboration
  • Engaging others
  • Acting with integrity

Criteria for selecting participants in the program are:

  • Capacity to stretch beyond current skills or role
  • Cross-functional capability
  • Demonstrated collaboration ability
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Participation in previous change initiative
  • Aptitude for coaching others and facilitation
  • Likely to benefit from an intense development experience
