Performance is happening all of the time so it is necessary to track this performance as it happens. Some things you may wish to consider in tracking performance:

  • Use tracking mechanisms for quantitative goals. Set standards and quantify them, then track on a regular or periodic basis.
  • Observe milestones and maintain documentation:
    • Steps completed on time: send a recognition note and keep a copy in the file
    • Participation in project: keep a copy of meeting agendas and outcome reports
    • Project planning: keep copies of working documents
  • If the goals are not quantifiable, use thoughtful judgments to write thorough explanations of expected results or desired behavior:
    • "Client surveys indicate a high level of approval for the accuracy and timeliness of services
      provided."
    • "Proposals are completed with a high level of accuracy and completeness. Enough information is included for effective implementation of project. Timelines and cost outcomes are within 5% of the estimate."
    • "Employee follows instructions accurately, and asks appropriate questions when needed."
    • "Work is performed with a high level of creativity, as demonstrated by examples in final project reports and informal feedback from project colleagues."
  • Keep a file describing critical incidents, and use it as a reminder when preparing the appraisal. Save examples of especially good or problematic work.
  • Adjust goals as necessary.
