Premium Payments Guide

1.5 x hourly rate in cash or comp time (at 1.5 x hours worked) for hours worked over 40 hrs in week

Fulltime employees - no payment permitted

Part time employees - paid as nonexempt

Holiday Work 1.5 x hourly rate for hours worked plus 8 hours holiday pay (or proportionate part thereof for less than 100% time appointment)
Shift Differential Eligible for $0.60 per hour premium payment if regularly scheduled shift of six or more hours begins before 6:00 a.m. or ends on or after 7:00 p.m.

Notes:

  • Seniority credit is awarded for up to a maximum of 40 hours of paid time each week. Premium payments – all categories/types – do not count toward types of seniority accumulation and/or application.
  • All hours worked are included in overtime calculations for employees in nonexempt and/or exempt non-V classifications.

Holiday Work Students paid an hourly rate who work on UM holiday are paid at 1.5 x hourly rate; Students who do not work on a holiday are not paid

Academic Staff (Faculty, UEA, P&A, Graduate Assistants)

Academic staff (faculty, P&A, graduate assistants) are paid a salary. Academic staff will not receive additional payments based on: working more than 40 hours in a week; accepting and/or responding to work related calls outside the usual work day; returning to work outside the usual work day; working on a University holiday; or based on the time of day that work is performed.
