Pay Practices by Employee Group

Pay practices at the University of Minnesota are managed differently for each employee group. Potential pay practice issues for each employee group include: Pay plans, salary adjustments, merit pay, holiday pay, shift differential, FLSA (overtime, call back, and on call) and the Premium Pay Matrix.

Employment laws and regulations cover each employee group. However, the legal requirements sometimes impact an entire employee group or impact employees within an employee group differently. For example, the overtime pay requirements of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) are different for employees working in non-exempt job classifications.

Employees may simultaneously hold appointments in more than one employee group as well as in multiple job classifications. In some cases, there are unique provisions to ensure compliance with the Fair Labor Standards Act’s overtime and record keeping requirements.
