Diversity in the Curriculum: Transforming Your Syllabus

Have you wanted to change aspects of your course to better reflect changes in your field and scholarship addressing diverse communities? The Office for Equity and Diversity (OED) and the Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL) invite faculty to engage in a hands-on, two-part workshop where they can revise syllabi or specific segments of courses to include more consideration of diversity and make their courses more attractive to diverse students on our campus.

The first session of the workshop will provide faculty with the "why and what" of diversity, and tools to begin identifying where and how to integrate changes in their syllabi. The second part of the workshop will pair faculty with a team leader and colleagues from similar fields to work on a revised syllabus. By the end of the session, each participant will have a working draft of a syllabus or syllabus segment.

Diversity in the Curriculum will be offered twice during the 2011-12 academic year (Session 1 and 2 in Fall; Session 1 and 2 in Spring). Each session will last two hours with a light lunch for participants.

A maximum of 15 participants may attend each session. Participants who complete both sessions of the workshop will receive a $250 professional development stipend. Participants are encouraged to complete both sessions during a single semester; however, if time constraints do not allow for this, it's acceptable to attend sessions in different semesters.
