All nonnative English speaking TAs must demonstrate proficiency in spoken English appropriate to the demands of their teachin assistantship. Levels of proficiency are rated on a 1 to 5 scale. (For a description of TA duties appropriate to each level go to Eligibility Requirements for TA Assignments.)

To find the English Language Proficiency Rating of graduate students in your department:

  1. Go to UM Reports: https://www.umreports.umn.edu/
  2. Click User Login. Enter your University of Minnesota STAFF Internet ID (X.500 username) and password - this is usually how you access your University e-mail. (A message about security may appear. Click OK. If a Certificate Name Check message appears, click Continue.)
  3. A box appears stating that the login was successful. Close the box.
  4. Under STUDENT & INSTRUCTION click on Graduate School Reports.
  5. Select English Language Proficiency - Eligibility for TA's.
  6. Enter a single Emplid OR selectUMNTC and then one or more graduate programs to display a list of students in the program/s who
    have taken the SPEAK test and their current rating.
