Description
The Mid-Career Faculty Learning Community for 2008-09 will focus on issues central to the experiences of faculty women. Research from the scholarship of teaching and learning indicates that the professional and personal lives of women in academe are informed in numerous ways by gender. Students (male and female) often have different (though unstated) expectations for faculty women as compared to faculty men. Communication, learning, and teaching styles may vary based on gender and academic discipline, which in turn creates different possibilities and challenges for effective and rewarding teaching practices. This learning community will draw upon the experiences of participants in addition to research on gender, teaching, and women in academe. We will explore and support the teaching practice and professional lives of University faculty women.
Participants
This year's program is designed for full-time faculty women who are associate or full professors at the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities. Participation is limited to 15 faculty members. Faculty members who are interested and available are encouraged to register early. A wait list will also be maintained. Wait listed faculty will be notified of their status early in the academic year.
Activities
Participants will meet eight times during the academic year. Participants must be able to attend at least six meetings to participate in the program and receive a $500 stipend. Topics and activities for each meeting will be determined by the participants and facilitated by experienced CTL teaching consultants. Given the philosophy of learning communities, participants are invited to share in the facilitation of meetings. Meetings will be held on the following Thursdays, 1:00-3:00pm. The location of meetings will be scheduled shortly.
