Early Career Faculty Learning Community - Spring 2009

Description

The overall purpose of the program is to expand faculty knowledge and skills in one area of their work life as a teacher. Each semester, one theme will be used to focus the community on a particular pedagogical topic. The theme for Spring 2009 is "Improving Lecture-based Teaching." The semester length is ideally suited to faculty who can devote an intensive but limited period of time toward improving their knowledge and skills as a teacher.

Participants

All pre-tenure faculty at the University of Minnesota are welcome to register for this community. Given the theme, participants should be engaged in a teaching assignment that is primarily delivered in a lecture mode.

Activities

The program builds on the current knowledge base of each participant and has a practical orientation. Small group discussions and individual consultations with CTL staff occur throughout the semester. Activities include:

  • regularly observing teachers who lecture
  • critically reflecting on your capabilities as a lecturer
  • applying what has been learned in your own classroom setting
  • obtaining feedback on your teaching
