What's Inside

Description

Many early career faculty have similar experiences in the classroom that can be addressed through the guidance offered by an experienced teaching consultant. One-to-one, confidential consultations by CTL staff have been specifically designed to address these typical early career teaching issues. Student evaluations of teaching, classroom management, active engagement of students, and valid assessments of student learning are among the most common issues that arise with early career faculty.

Participants

All pre-tenure faculty at the University are welcome to request a consultation from CTL staff. Faculty do not need to have a teaching assignment during the semester of the consultation.

Activities

In addition to the issues outlined above, one commonly requested activity is an early semester classroom visit where the Student Feedback through Consensus (SFC) instrument is administered. This instrument examines student reactions to the quality of instruction that has been provided, and CTL staff meet with the instructor to summarize themes learned from the visit.

Many other issues on teaching and learning such as syllabus development, improving lecture based teaching, and course design or revision can be the subject of an individualized consultation. Finally, early career faculty can be introduced to the proposed new Student Rating of Teaching form that is expected to replace the current SET form in the coming academic year.
