Education

  • B.A. University of Minnesota, Spanish
  • M.A. University of Minnesota, Teaching English as a Second Language

My two greatest passions are teaching and learning! My experience includes working with international TAs since 1983 in the Communication Skills courses and coordinating the IT Pre-Academic Orientation and English Language Program. I specialize in pronunciation training (accent enhancement), and have worked in particular with speakers of World Englishes (India, Nigeria, Tanzania, etc.) You can get more information about my pronunciation materials @: www.eslvideos.com. I've presented on various aspects of teacher training and teaching pronunciation at several national and international conferences, including international TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages), NAFSA (National Association of Foreign Students Association), and the 6th National Conference on the Education and Employment of Graduate Teaching Assistants.

Previous teaching experience: Minnesota English Center, University of Minnesota; Instituto de Estudios Norteamericanos, Barcelona, Spain. Co-author of Communicate: Strategies for International Teaching Assistants by Smith, Meyers, Burkhalter, Prentice-Hall Regents, 1992, Pronunciation for Success: Second Edition by Meyers and Holt, Aspen Productions, 1998, and Success with Presentations: A Course for Non-Native Speakers of English, by Meyers and Holt, Aspen Productions, 2002 as well as various teacher training materials.

In early 2007, I conducted a series of workshops on teaching pronunciation at the Faculty of Second Language Education at the Middle East Technical University in Ankara, Turkey.
