People Leadership Skills Curriculum

Core Supervisory Skills is now People Leadership Skills Curriculum

The People Leadership Skills Curriculum is the University's name for the set of nine training courses offered to supervisors and managers of non-student employees who want to learn foundational management skills.  The curriculum builds upon the content of our former training program, Core Supervisory Skills which focused on the different aspects of performance management.  It is designed to offer participants more skill practice time, scheduling flexibility and take less time to complete.

Some highlights of the redesign include:

• Less focus on classroom instruction and more emphasis on self-paced, outside classroom learning
• The addition of the Introduction to Change Management for Managers course
• Ability to complete some of the courses via UMConnect
• The creation of "Lunch and Discuss" sessions to provide participants additional skills development support

Recent graduates of Core Supervisory Skills do not need to complete the People Leadership Skills Curriculum.  With the exception of the Introduction to Change Management for Managers course, it contains the same content as "Core."

Goal of Curriculum
The purpose of the People Leadership Skills Curriculum is to provide the knowledge and teach the skills supervisors and managers need to effectively manage the performance of faculty and staff.

Format of Courses and Scheduling

• For each course, a “blended learning” format is used which combines the delivery of one hour of content as pre-work along with classroom instruction
• Each of the nine courses are offered five times per year
• It’s recommended, but not required, that courses be completed in order

Completion Certificate & Celebration Lunch

• Once all courses have be completed participants can request a Completion Certificate
• To celebrate completion of the curriculum participants will be invited to attend one of three graduation lunches offered throughout the year

Post-Training Support

• Upon completion of courses participants have the option to attend regularly scheduled “Lunch and Discuss” sessions
• These sessions are designed to review/revisit important performance management topics as well as give participants the opportunity to discuss them with peers
• Graduate of Core Supervisory Skills training are welcome to attend these sessions
