The University of Minnesota has contracted with the following four moving companies to provide discounted services to new employees moving from out of state:
These companies are also experienced with international moves. Although the discounts apply only to interstate moves, the companies may also offer some discounts for moves within Minnesota. Call the company representatives for full details.
To take advantage of this discount, your hiring department must send a Letter of Authorization to the moving company confirming your employment with the University. An example of the letter can be found at the University Policy on Relocating New Employees.
Certain appointments may be eligible to have some or all moving expenses reimbursed. You may choose one of the four contracted moving companies listed above, but if none of the contract movers fit your needs you have the option of selecting any moving vendor you prefer.
Your department will send a Letter of Authorization to the mover you choose, confirming your appointment and describing what portion of the move is reimbursable. Upon receipt of the letter of authorization, the mover will contact both you and their moving agent in your locality to arrange moving service.
Because your decisions at this point will affect the overall cost of the move, be sure you understand the mover's costs and which costs are reimbursable. Not all moving expenses will qualify for reimbursement.

If your moving expenses will not be reimbursed, you may still choose any of the four discounted contract movers. To receive the discounts, your hiring department must send a Letter of Authorization to the moving company confirming your employment with the University. They will note on the letter of authorization that you are responsible for all costs related to your move.
All or part of your moving expenses may be tax deductible. The IRS information helplines or a tax accountant or preparer can help you determine your tax obligation. Be sure to save all receipts.
