Procedure
Administrative Transitional Leave Application
- Developing a Transitional Leave Plan: The administrator moving to a faculty or professional role must submit to the responsible administrator a written leave plan. The transitional leave plan must demonstrate how the intent of the leave is consistent with the overall goal for transitional leaves, which is to refresh the individual's level of expertise in teaching and research in rapidly changing fields for the benefit of the students and the institution. Also, the leave plan must describe the specific actions to be undertaken.
- Submitting the Leave Plan for Approval: Using form UM 1632 Administrative Transitional Leave , submit a transitional leave request to the responsible administrator. In the case of the president requesting the leave, negotiations for an administrative transitional leave are between the president and the Board.
Approval of Administrative Transitional Leave
- Approval: The responsible administrator approves requests for administrative transitional leaves with the president or delegate granting final approval. In the case of the president requesting the leave, the Board grants approval.
- Agreement: Administrative transitional leaves must be set forth in an agreement executed by the individual and the responsible administrator.
Decision Regarding Length of Leave
The length of leave at full pay is negotiable; however, it generally does not exceed twelve months and most will be from three to six months duration. Criteria to be considered in determining the length of the leave may include time spent away from the field, changes in the field, the programs and the home department during the individual's term as administrator, and aspects of the leave plan that may require a specific time commitment.
Leave Report
The administrator taking the transitional leave may be requested to provide within one month of the conclusion of the leave some form of documentation or report on the activities and outcomes of the leave. The report is to be given to the responsible administrator to whom the individual now reports, with a copy provided to the responsible administrator and president or delegate granting the leave.
