Flexible Hourly Appointment Benefits
A flexible hourly appointment provides a tuition benefit at the start of the semester. Your department will provide the GAE with an estimate of the number of hours you will work during the semester.
This type of appointment can be beneficial to you if you work the number of estimated hours or more during the semester; however, if you work less than the estimated hours (even by one hour), or do not work the minimum requirement of 98 hours per semester, you will lose all or a portion of your tuition benefit. You will be responsible for repaying the unearned portion of tuition benefits you receive. In addition, you could lose your non-resident waiver if you work below the number of hours that your department first estimated. If more hours are worked than originally reported, the GAE office will increase the tuition benefit, if applicable.
The GAE office will notify you of expectations, hours of your appointment, and any changes of hours worked at the start and end of each semester.
Prorated Tuition Benefits
Appointments beginning after or ending before the official payroll semester appointment dates
Tuition benefits are prorated for appointments of at least 98 hours that begin after or end before the official payroll semester appointment dates. Any remaining tuition cost(s) will be billed to you, at non-resident rates if applicable. If the prorated appointment average falls below the 98 hour minimum eligibility requirement, 100% of the tuition benefit will be billed to you, at non-resident rates if applicable.
Appointments ending due to graduation
If your appointment ends early because of graduation, please contact the Graduate Assistant Employment office.
Making Sure Your Tuition Is Paid
Your tuition benefit only covers tuition and all or a portion of the University fee, depending upon your appointment percentage and the number of registered credits. Information regarding the University fee and how it is calculated may be found at Student One Stop.
Tuition benefits do not pay for other charges, such as lab fees, installment fees, late charges, late registration fees, et al, which are assessed by Student Accounts Receivable and charged to your account. You are responsible for payment of such charges not covered by your tuition benefit.
You must make sure that your tuition is paid by the payment due date. If tuition benefits are not reflected on your billing statement, do not ignore your billing statement. Tuition benefits and non-resident waivers will post to Student Accounts after each semester begins, once appointment information is updated by the hiring department. Check your billing statements carefully to ensure your tuition benefits are properly credited. If you do nothing, you may be assessed non-refundable late fees.
If you receive a bill that you believe is incorrect, immediately contact your employing department and/or the Graduate Assistant Employment office to resolve the problem.
