The University of Minnesota offers eligible employees and their families the choice of four medical plan options that provide preventive care, regular medical care for the diagnosis and treatment of most illnesses and injuries, and pharmacy benefits. The plans offer flexibility ranging from a closely managed HMO to options with broad access to networks with providers available throughout the state, region, and nation.

The five dental plans offer comprehensive coverage that includes preventive care and restorative services in options ranging from in-network-only plans to plans that include out-of-network benefits and a plan with open access to the provider of choice.

Highlights of the medical and dental plans compared to other public sector and Big 10 employers include:

For employees in the low-cost base plan, the University pays 90 percent of employee-only coverage and 85 percent of family coverage

  • Competitive with other public sector employers
  • Competitive with other Big 10 employers

No deductibles

  • 60 percent of our comparison public sector employers have a deductible ranging from $30 to $1,000 for single coverage and from $60 to $2,000 for family coverage
  • 50 percent of Big 10 employers have a deductible ranging from $200 to $900 for single coverage and from $500 to $2,700 for family coverage

Maximum prescription out-of-pocket cost of $750 for single coverage and $1,500 for family coverage

  • Over half of our comparison public sector employers have a higher prescription out-of-pocket maximum
  • All of the Big 10 employers have a higher prescription out-of-pocket maximum

In its base plan, the University of Minnesota uses copayments rather than coinsurance for employee/employer cost sharing, which decreases the cost burden on those who are ill

  • 40 percent of our comparison public sector employers use coinsurance rather than copayments
  • 60 percent of Big 10 employers use coinsurance rather than copayments

The maximum annual dental benefit at the University of Minnesota is $1,500

  • Higher than the maximum annual benefit at all of our comparison public sector employers
  • Equal to or higher than 80 percent of the maximum annual benefit amounts in the Big 10
