About the Employee Engagement (E2) Survey

The University of Minnesota conducted a survey of engagement among faculty and staff in 2013.

  • Number of employees surveyed: 19,436
  • Total number of responses: 10,802
  • Response percentage: 57% (47% for faculty, 59% for staff)
  • Employee groups surveyed: Benefits-eligible faculty and staff, including professionals in training, received a survey. Independent contractors, undergraduate student employees, graduate student employees, and temporary casual employees did not receive a survey. Faculty and staff with multiple appointments completed one survey based on their experience in their primary appointment.
  • Survey development: The University of Minnesota developed the survey in collaboration with faculty and staff across the University along with external vendor Hay Group. The final survey items reflect a blend of internal and externally validated  research on key drivers of engagement and important factors unique to the University of Minnesota.
  • Survey method: Internet
  • Timing: The survey was open between October 14 and November 1, 2013
  • Survey administration: To ensure that employees felt comfortable providing candid feedback, the survey was confidential. The University worked with Hay Group, an external vendor. Hay Group is the sole recipient of completed surveys and maintains a confidentiality policy that prohibits any person at the University from viewing the survey responses of individual employees.
  • Technology compatibility: The survey was compatible with iPhone and Android phones.
  • Languages: The survey was administered in English. Supporting materials were translated into Spanish, Hmong, and Somali.
