University of Minnesota faculty and staff members have access to countless entertainment, education, and money-saving opportunities on-campus. UPerks is designed to help employees discover all the perks of working at the University. Currently UPerks is focused on the opportunities available near the Twin Cities campuses. These opportunities are available to all U employees. Opportunities around the coordinate campuses will be added in the future. According to the Surgeon General, 30 minutes of activity per day will help you live longer and healthier. The Mayo Clinic has found that regular exercise can boost your mood, help keep off excess pounds, ward off viral illnesses, and strengthen your heart, among other benefits.
As an employee, you may not be aware that the University has a program called 10,000 Steps to help you get the recommended amount of exercise. You may wonder how far do you have to walk to get 10,000 steps and how long will it take you? The New Employee Orientation program has developed a series of Wellness Walks that can help you get your 10,000 steps each day. Each of the Wellness Walks takes in interesting views around the East and West Banks and St. Paul campus, focusing on bridges, green spaces, the Gopher Way, and the river. The walks range from 2,500 steps (about 25 minutes) to 5,250 steps (about 55 minutes). There are six Wellness Walks maps with routes plotted out on them posted on the UPerks website. If you have a favorite walking route that you’d like to share with other new employees, e-mail us at newemployee@umn.edu and we will add it to our Wellness Walks list.
