You have different options for your medical coverage depending on if you are under age 65 or age 65 or over.
If you or your spouse/registered same-sex domestic partner are age 65 or older and eligible for Medicare, you must be enrolled in Medicare Part A and Part B to participate in the UPlan Retiree Group.
Please note that if you and your spouse/registered same-sex domestic partner are both under age 65 or both over age 65, you must enroll in the same plan.
If you and your spouse/registered same-sex domestic partner or insurance-eligible dependents are in different age groups (one age 65 or older, one under age 65), you may select plans appropriate by age group.
If your spouse/registered same-sex domestic partner works at the University, you may be added to his or her coverage as a dependent. Then when your spouse/registered same-sex domestic partner retires, each of you would have single retiree coverage.
If you decide not to continue coverage, you and your dependents may never re-enroll in one of the medical plans.
You pay the full cost of the premiums; the University does not contribute to insurance coverage for retirees. You will be billed directly by the plan option that you choose.
If you chose coverage for yourself but not your dependents when you retire, you may still be able to add them later. You may be able to add dependent coverage if your eligible spouse/registered same-sex domestic partner loses other coverage, or if you marry or enter into a same-sex domestic partnership after retirement.
A written request for a change in coverage due to one of these circumstances must be made to Employee Benefits within 30 days of the date of status change. Call Employee Benefits if you have more specific questions about changes in your coverage.
You can change plan options at the annual open enrollment period in November or mid-year if you are moving out of the plan's service area.
If you turn 65 during the year, you must change to one of the medical plans in the "Over 65 Options." This also applies to your spouse/registered same-sex domestic partner who turns 65 during the year even if you are under 65.
You have a special 60-day open enrollment period prior to retirement. You are encouraged to meet with a benefits counselor to discuss your options for continuing coverage. You can change your health plan option at this time; however, if you have individual coverage, you cannot add family coverage at this time.
Any eligible dependents including your spouse, registered same-sex domestic partner, and/or dependent children, who are covered at the time of your retirement, may also continue coverage.
