Retirees have different options for travel assistance services depending on age.
If you are under 65 and enrolled in any of the UPlan medical options, you are enrolled automatically in the FrontierMEDEX Emergency Medical Assistance Program.
Retirees over age 65 can purchase TravMed Abroad, a comprehensive package of short-term medical insurance, emergency medical evacuation, repatriation, and worldwide 24-hour access to emergency medical assistance for U.S. citizens traveling outside of the United States. Though the University of Minnesota is not recommending or subsidizing this benefit, we want you to know about a program that we believe would provide valuable benefits at a reasonable cost when you travel internationally.
TravMed Abroad is offered through FrontierMEDEX, a part of the same company that provides the program for active employees. FrontierMEDEX (new name, same benefits) has been in business since 1977 and has been offering the TravMed Abroad product since 1981.
The $100,000 Emergency Medical Expense Benefit can be applied to expenses associated with physicians' fees and hospital admission, medically necessitated evacuation, repatriation of mortal remains, special trip expenses, and more.
The plan is quite similar to the travel assistance program for retirees under 65 and active employees and may be helpful for those over 65 retirees who are traveling internationally with a spouse/same-sex domestic partner covered by the under 65 retiree plan.
The cost to purchase TravMed Abroad is by age bracket:
| Ages 65 to 70 | $4.00 per day |
| Ages 71 to 80 | $5.75 per day |
| Ages 81 to 85 | $8.00 per day |
Annual frequent traveler coverage is available by age bracket:
| Ages 65 to 70 | $200 per year |
| Ages 71 to 80 | $250 per year |
FrontierMEDEX customer service representatives who can answer your questions and help you enroll are available at 1-800-732-5309 between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. EST Monday through Friday.
